Breast augmentation with Thai FDA-registered implants, performed at a partner hospital
Choose silicone or saline implants, round or teardrop, placed through an armpit, inframammary or periareolar incision. The operation is performed by our surgical team under general anaesthetic in hospital, and Dr. Kate follows your recovery at the clinic.
Decisions start with real measurements
The right size does not come from a number of cc you have in mind, but from the width of the breast base, the thickness of the existing tissue, the elasticity of the skin and the proportions of your shoulders and hips. Dr. Kate measures these, has you try sizers, then refers you to the surgical team to plan placement beneath or above the muscle. The implants used are registered with the Thai FDA and with the US FDA or carry the European CE mark. Every implant has a serial number and an implant card for you to keep, and the brand the surgeon selects is shown to you with its box and documentation before surgery.
Implant options
| Aspect | Options | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Fill material | Silicone gel | Feels close to natural breast tissue, and the cohesive gel does not leak if the shell tears, but detecting a rupture requires ultrasound or MRI |
| Fill material | Saline | A smaller incision; if it leaks the body absorbs the saline and the change is obvious immediately, but it feels firmer and edge rippling is more visible in slim patients |
| Shape | Round | Full in both the upper and lower pole with a defined cleavage; rotation does not affect the shape |
| Shape | Teardrop | A sloping upper pole and full lower pole like a natural breast, but if the implant rotates the shape is distorted and needs surgical correction |
| Surface | Smooth / textured | Smooth moves naturally and is used with round implants. Textured grips the tissue to reduce rotation and is required for teardrop implants, but has been associated with BIA-ALCL, which is very rare |
Incision sites
Armpit (transaxillary)
A 3–4 cm incision hidden in the armpit fold, with no scar on the breast
Breast fold (inframammary)
A 4–5 cm incision in the fold beneath the breast gives the clearest view of the pocket and allows teardrop implants
Around the areola (periareolar)
An incision along the edge of the areola, suited to cases combined with areola reduction
Before and on the day of surgery
Recovery
Capsular contracture, in which scar tissue tightens around the implant and makes the breast hard and misshapen, occurs in around 5–10% over the long term. Other risks include rupture, rotation, edge rippling, temporary changes in nipple sensation, haematoma, infection that may require implant removal, and BIA-ALCL, a lymphoma associated with textured implants that is very rare. Implants are not designed to last a lifetime, and ultrasound or MRI is advised every 2–3 years after year 5. Seek medical attention promptly if one breast swells rapidly, there is severe pain on one side, the wound is red or discharging pus, you have a fever or you have difficulty breathing.
Breastfeeding, and nipple or areola reshaping options
The implant sits beneath the mammary gland, and armpit or inframammary incisions do not cut through the milk ducts, so most women can breastfeed, although some may produce less milk. A periareolar incision is more likely to affect the ducts, so tell the doctor if you plan to have children. Women with long or large nipples or a wide areola can have nipple reshaping or areola reduction in the same operation, or separately at the clinic under local anaesthetic in 45–60 minutes; this may affect some of the milk ducts, which the doctor always explains beforehand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to stay in hospital for breast augmentation?
The operation is performed under general anaesthetic at a partner hospital. Most patients go home the same day after 4–6 hours of recovery, or stay 1 night if the operation is in the afternoon or combined with another procedure.
How long do implants last? Will they need replacing?
Current implants have no fixed lifespan but are not designed to last a lifetime. Many last 10–20 years. Periodic ultrasound or MRI checks are advised, with replacement if a rupture or capsular contracture is found or if you want to change size.
Can I still have breast cancer screening after augmentation?
Yes. Tell the radiographer you have implants so the appropriate mammogram technique is used, possibly supplemented with ultrasound or MRI. Placement beneath the muscle makes the breast tissue easier to examine.
How many cc should I choose?
It depends on the width of your breast base and the elasticity of your skin. For most Thai patients this is 250–350 cc. Going beyond the natural base makes implant edges visible and increases the risk of early sagging. The doctor will have you try several sizers before deciding together.
