Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal for underarms, bikini, face, arms, legs and men: long-term reduction in 6–8 sessions

The laser sends energy to the pigment in the hair root and destroys the hair stem cells without harming the surrounding skin. Hairs become finer and sparser and stop growing long term once the course is complete, with fewer ingrown hairs and less darkening from shaving.

Why 6–8 sessions

Every hair has its own cycle: a growth phase (anagen), a transition phase (catagen) and a resting phase (telogen). The laser can only destroy roots in the growth phase, which are darkly pigmented and connected to the stem cells, and at any one time these make up only 20–30 per cent of all hairs. Sessions are therefore repeated 4–6 weeks apart for the face and underarms and 6–8 weeks apart for arms and legs, to catch the next generation of hairs as they enter the growth phase. After 6–8 sessions, hair is typically reduced by 70–90 per cent, and what remains is fine, pale and barely visible. Some people need a maintenance session once or twice a year because hormones can wake dormant roots.

Device and wavelengths

The clinic uses a Thai FDA-registered hair removal laser [device name] with wavelengths suited to Thai skin, such as 808 nm diode for fair to medium skin and 1064 nm for darker skin or areas with dark marks. The handpiece has contact cooling to reduce discomfort

On the day

Skin tone and hair type assessmentThe doctor selects the wavelength and energy, with a small test spot for darker skin or first visits
ShavingOur staff shave the area, or you shave it yourself a day beforehand. No plucking, waxing or threading for 3–4 weeks before, because the root must still be present
LaserWarm, like a light elastic flick. The cooled tip eases discomfort, and numbing cream is available for the bikini area or beard
Cold compress and soothing creamRedness around the follicles for a few hours. Avoid roll-on deodorant, perfume, scrubs and saunas for 2–3 days
Between sessionsIn weeks 1–3 the treated hairs shed on their own; do not pluck them. In weeks 4–6 the next, finer generation grows in, which is when the next session is booked. After the course, maintenance once or twice a year as needed

Optional underarm and groin brightening

Dark underarms and groin usually result from repeated shaving, plucking and friction, which prompt the skin to produce more pigment. Once shaving stops thanks to laser hair removal, some of the darkening fades on its own. For those who want faster results, the clinic adds a low-energy pigment laser or a prescription exfoliating cream on the same day, alternating with the hair removal sessions. If the darkening is due to insulin resistance or a skin rash, the doctor will tell you and recommend treating the underlying cause first.

Not suitable if you

Are pregnant, have had strong sun exposure or used self-tanner within 2 weeks, have taken isotretinoin within 6 months, have a skin infection or cold sore in the treatment area, take photosensitising medication, or have a history of keloids. Moles and tattoos in the area must be avoided. White, grey and light blonde hair respond poorly because they contain no pigment

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser hair removal really permanent?

The accurate term is long-term hair reduction. Roots that have been destroyed do not regrow, but dormant roots can later be woken by hormones. After 6–8 sessions hair is typically reduced by 70–90 per cent, and some people have a maintenance session once or twice a year.

How much does it hurt?

It feels warm with a light elastic flick, and the handpiece is cooled. Most people find underarms, arms and legs quite comfortable. The bikini area and upper lip are more sensitive, and numbing cream can be applied beforehand.

Can it be done on darker skin?

Yes, using the 1064 nm wavelength and appropriately adjusted energy. The doctor performs a small test spot first to avoid dark or light patches.

Which areas do men usually treat?

Back, shoulders, chest and the beard line, to reduce ingrown hairs and shaving spots. Large areas take 45–60 minutes per session, and because men's hair is coarser it usually needs 8–10 sessions.

Can I shave between sessions?

Yes, shave as normal, but do not pluck, wax or use depilatory methods that remove the root, because the laser needs the root as its target.
