Colon Hydrotherapy

Colon Hydrotherapy: closed system with filtered RO water, 45 minutes

The large intestine is cleansed with warm, RO-filtered water through a closed, single-use system, taking about 45 minutes. Suited to people with constipation or starting a detox programme, with the doctor screening for contraindications in every case.

What colon hydrotherapy is, and how it differs from an enema

Colon hydrotherapy introduces a large volume of warm water gradually into the large intestine through a small tube, then lets waste flow out through a second tube in a closed system. It differs from a home coffee or herbal enema, which uses only 1–2 litres of water and reaches only the lower bowel. Colon hydrotherapy at the clinic uses a total of 20–25 litres over the session, so it cleanses as far as the upper colon. The water is filtered by reverse osmosis and kept at 37–38 degrees. All parts of the equipment that touch the body are single-use kits, opened from a new packet in front of you every time.

The 45-minute procedure

Assessment and historyThe doctor or nurse asks about medical conditions, abdominal surgery, medication and bowel habits to rule out contraindications
PreparationYou change and lie on your side on the bed. The therapist inserts a small, lubricated tube just 3–5 centimetres into the rectum
Cleansing in cyclesWarm water enters gradually at low pressure. When you feel fullness it is released, and this is repeated over several cycles, with gentle abdominal massage to help waste move
Finish and restThe tube is removed, you use the bathroom to pass any remaining water, then rest with water or an electrolyte drink before leaving

Who may benefit

  • Chronic constipation that has not improved with dietary and fluid changes, where a doctor has found no cause requiring treatment
  • Bloating, fullness or a feeling of incomplete emptying
  • Starting a detox programme or changing eating habits, and wanting to begin with a light, comfortable feeling
  • Bowel preparation on a doctor's advice in certain cases
Who should not have it

Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis), diverticulitis, bleeding haemorrhoids or anal fissures, bowel or abdominal surgery within the past 6 months, hernia, uncontrolled heart or kidney disease, pregnancy, and anyone with unexplained rectal bleeding. The last group should see a doctor to find the cause first and should not have colon hydrotherapy

Limitations to know before treatment

Colon hydrotherapy clears retained waste and leaves you feeling lighter that day, but it does not remove toxins from the blood or liver, does not lighten the skin or produce lasting weight loss, and is not a treatment for disease. Too frequent sessions can deplete electrolytes and disturb the gut microbiome. Most doctors advise no more than once a week at the start of a programme, then spacing out to monthly or as symptoms require. What genuinely delivers long-term results is fibre, water, movement and sleep, which the doctor advises on alongside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it painful or embarrassing?

Most people feel no pain, only intermittent abdominal fullness similar to the urge to go. It takes place in a private room, you are covered throughout and the closed system has no odour. A female therapist is available on request; let us know when booking.

How often can I have it?

No more than once a week at the start of a programme, then spacing out to monthly or as symptoms require. Too frequent sessions can deplete electrolytes and disturb the gut microbiome.

Does colon hydrotherapy help with weight loss?

The weight lost that day is waste and water, not fat. Long-term weight loss requires changes to diet and energy use, which the clinic's weight-management programme addresses directly.

Does it wash away the good gut bacteria?

Some are washed out, but the body restores them when you eat fibre and take probiotics as advised. This is also why it should not be done too frequently.
