PRP

PRP platelet-rich plasma injections to rejuvenate skin and nourish the scalp, by a doctor

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is plasma from your own blood with a concentrated level of platelets, rich in growth factors that stimulate repair of the skin and hair roots. It is used for dull skin, acne marks and early hair thinning, with nothing introduced from outside the body.

What PRP is and what it can do

Blood contains platelets, which store many growth factors such as PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF and EGF that the body uses to repair tissue after injury. Drawing 10–20 ml of blood and centrifuging it yields plasma with 3–5 times the normal concentration of platelets. When injected back into the skin or scalp, the growth factors stimulate fibroblasts to produce collagen, increase blood flow and extend the growth phase of the hair. The results are brighter, smoother skin, shallower acne marks and less thinning where the hair roots have not yet miniaturised. PRP does not add volume and is not a substitute for filler or anti-wrinkle injections.

On the day

Blood draw of 10–20 ml from the armInto special tubes containing anticoagulant and separator gel. Drink plenty of water and eat beforehand to make the blood draw easier
Centrifuge for 10–15 minutesThe centrifuge separates out the red cells, leaving plasma and concentrated platelets, around 4–8 ml of PRP. Numbing cream is applied to the face or scalp meanwhile
Injection by the doctorOn the face, superficial points across the whole face or concentrated on acne marks, under-eyes and dark areas. On the scalp, points 1–1.5 cm apart across the thinning area. 20–30 minutes
LED light (PRP-LED programme)Followed by 15–20 minutes of red and near-infrared LED to reduce redness, boost cell activity and enhance the effect of the growth factors

What it is used for

Dull, tired facial skin

Brighter, smoother skin after 2–3 sessions, for those who prefer no synthetic products

Acne marks and shallow acne scars

Combined with fractional laser or microneedling, it speeds healing and improves results

Dark circles and thin under-eye skin

Improves under-eye skin quality where filler is unsuitable. Results are gradual

Thinning hair, early hair loss

Slows shedding and increases hair thickness where roots are still present. Used with medication and laser, or after a hair transplant to help grafts take

Other areas

Neck, backs of the hands, décolletage and stretch marks, for smoother skin texture

Months 3–4Hair results become clearerLess shedding and new fine hairs in those who respond, assessed with comparison photographs
Limitations and who should not have it

PRP results are gradual and depend on the quality of each person's platelets. Smokers, people who sleep little or those with chronic conditions may see less benefit. It is not suited to deep acne scars, deep folds or bald areas where the roots have miniaturised, which call for laser, filler or a hair transplant instead. Not for people with low platelets, blood disorders, cancer under active treatment, a bloodstream infection, blood thinners, pregnancy or severe anaemia. Side effects are redness, bruising and a dull ache for 1–2 days. Allergy does not occur because it is your own blood, but infection at the injection points is possible without clean aftercare

Frequently Asked Questions

Can PRP replace a hair transplant?

No. PRP strengthens the roots you still have and slows shedding, but it does not create new roots in areas that are already bald. Those areas need a hair transplant.

How many sessions before I see results?

Most people notice fresher skin after the second session. Results for acne marks and hair are clear at 3–4 months after starting, so we recommend at least 3 sessions.

Does it hurt?

The blood draw is like a routine health check. After numbing cream, the injections feel like a series of pinpricks. The scalp is slightly more sensitive than the face, and the doctor uses vibration or cooling to ease the sensation.

Can it be combined with filler or anti-wrinkle injections?

Yes. They work in different layers for different purposes. The doctor usually injects the anti-wrinkle product and filler first, then does PRP at the next visit or on the same day in separate areas.
